this is a digitally manipulated reincarnation of a recent commissioned print. I have to confess I really like the added layers that the extra manipulation can bring, even if (as in the case of most of my work) the basis image itself comes from the original print and is not significantly altered.

What do you think? (This is another monotype on paper, sized 14"x17", and was part of the library show).

What else am I working on? A double portrait of two adorable children, plus odds and ends (including a few paintings.. have no idea where these will 'go' style-or final content-wise..) Am also really excited about having been picked by the Small World Curators to have a show at the Small World in Princeton (on Witherspoon Street, no less!!) in October 2010.

It will run from June 25th till September - the opening will be on June 25th at 6, and will feature a talk by Yours Truly on 42 Tips for Cultivating Your Creative Side.. I am very excited by this opportunity to show my work so close to home!

It has been a slow Spring in terms of posting, and thus there is much to make up for. Images coming in the next few days, but in the meantime I can't wait to share the good news - my favorite public library (Cranbury Public Library in Cranbury, NJ) will host a small show of my work over the summer! (Needless to say, I am very excited (and nervous!!))

This week, I met with the wonderful people at the Blue Rooster Bakery and Cafe here in Cranbury (if you know me, they you have heard me wax uber-enthusiastic about them - the "really cute place with great coffee right down the street from us"), and they are holding a small show of my work. Yay!! VERY EXCITING!! So, if you are in the area, go and check them out (and let me know what you think of the pieces in the library..:))

It's been a while since I last posted anything, what with one thing and another. It's been a busy Winter. I hope to get around to making more art, as well as posting more actively in the future. (I have also in the last months been taking a class on photographing and digitally presenting one's work, so the quality of images should be getting better, with any luck..:))

I am thinking of doing a small show of my recent work featuring children. I have done a fair amount of it, and the one above is another in the 'series' (although it has been more of a disjointed sequence of works, rather than anything that ordered). What interests me is not only a child's sweetness and beauty, but also the range of more ambiguous feelings (of tremendous responsibility, exhaustion, sleeplessness etc) that inevitably affect the adults around them, and the way that might get mirrored in the image.

This is a painting in its current state - acrylics, plus a silkscreen on top. For some reason I seem to REALLY like it at the moment. It would look even better with a nice modern angular light Scandinavian frame...

I have not had a lot of time for art lately, but here is a sample of what I've been up to - it started off as a commissioned piece, but took off from there, when I added the silkscreened lady to it. I have done this kind of 'mixed media' lately, and have really enjoyed it. I like the way the two different styles complement each other.

Many more images to follow (I have been lax in posting lately). This one was just unusual in terms of technique - it is a scanned image of an inked PLATE of mine, as opposed to the resulting image. The black outlines actually come from the image underneath the plate..

I have done a lot of work on the elephant theme lately, because of a friend's request for some pachyderm-themed paintings and prints. This is a small acrylic painting.

I love this piece. It is a charcoal triptych of a man's head, and I think I really captured the defiant attitude on this one. (Given its dimensions, it is difficult to photograph, so you'll have to excuse the artist's toes that are peeking in..)

This is a drawing made, using sanguine (an ocher-colored chalk, really) - I love it in drawings, especially of faces, as it lends it such warmth, but can give you a good tonal range, from the lightest to fairly dark. I fell in love with this image, with its extreme contrast of light and shadow, and loved working on this piece.

For some reason, I have been painting again recently (despite the roaring success of the show, which I still can't believe and can't quite get my mind around..:)) This was done in acrylics, and is biggish (I'm guessing about 18" x 22".)

I didn't start out drawing an Orthodox nun, but somehow ended up with one, slightly reminiscent of Vrublyov (is that the right Latin transliteration?), I think, with big, slightly sad eyes, and a thoughtful mien. I like her, I have to confess, even though I wonder what she's thinking about... 14"x17" on paper, as always.

This is verging on the abstract, but I must say I like the way the linework and the shadows turned out. Original is 14" x 17" (and this photograph distorts the proportions a little bit, because of how I took it.)

Ecstasy of Ste Therese (two takes)

I loved this image, and so did a number of takes of it - the one above turned out to be most like a quick pencil sketch, so I'm posting this first. (The others turned out a little more abstract.) As always, it is a monotype print, measuring 14 " x 17".
Probably my favorite in this series - don't you just love the look of complete abandon on her face? I loved the more dramatic lighting too. The measurements are the same as above.

A technical note: I think the images may be slightly out of proportion on my photographs, compared to the originals, because of the way I tend to take the pictures. Just something to keep in mind.

This is just a quick preview of coming attractions : all going well, I will be having a show at the Nassau Street location of the Small World Cafe in Princeton in September and early October of this year. (Needless to say, I am very excited, and think that my artwork and the best coffee and carrot cake in town are going to go really well together.. :))

This one is the Flapper Queen (I was working with the same image as in the previous post), because she looks reminiscent of the 1920ies-1930ies beauties to me - maybe it is in the attitude even more than in the linework. (And yes, it's sort of unfinished on purpose..:)). Original size 14" x 17"

This is just so you don't think that I don't ever use male subjects - here's a recent one, again 14" x 17". I loved the dramatic lighting, which is not quite that obvious on a monotype. I did a charcoal of the same subject, which I may upload at some point.

I thought this looked sort of interesting as experiment - on the top is the original monotype, 14"x17", and below is a digital manipulation of it. Interesting! The pencil-sketch style is a 'safer' option, of course, compared to some wilder filters one could use - something to keep in mind, for when I run out of inspiration..
